Great Farmers! Great Nation!

Fellow distinguished poultry farmers and leaders in the poultry industry and its value chain. Many are the afflictions of the righteous according to a verse in the Bible, but much more are the afflictions of poultry farmers in the past one year in Nigeria.

Right from the time of covid-19 lockdown to the period of egg gluts to high cost of feed ingredients and scarcity of feed ingredients, to record high prices of feeds and feeds concentrate, land border closure, seemingly undefeated insurgency, unwarranted kidnappings of members, unfavorable government policy, multiple taxation, naira devaluation, #EndSars protest, recession and, currently an unbearable hardship  (first of its kind) in  the history of poultry industry in Nigeria where one kg of maize is sold for 200 naira and 230 naira per kg of Soya bean meal in the month of January (the peak period of harvest). This can only happen in Nigeria!

As a result, many farms have been closed down and sold off, and many more have down sized, many farms went bankrupt and there owners are either dead or are nursing some terminal ailments.

Above all, I want to empathize with all poultry farmers over this unpalatable condition and untold economic hardship our leaders have plunged us into, especially in the Southwest.

Meanwhile there was a meeting of all the southwest PAN Chairmen and southwest executives on Tuesday 12 January,  2021.The meeting was held at Poultry Haven,  Iyana Ajia, Ibadan. The major discuss was the problem of incessant increase in the prices of maize and soyabean meal,  and the nonchalant attitude of the government towards this,  despite outcry from Poultry farmers for government to allow importation of maize. It was discussed at the meeting that if nothing is being done, the poultry industry in Nigeria and the entire southwest economy may soon collapse Hence a need to hold an emergency joint press conference by all the chairmen of southwest PAN and southwest executives to drive home our demands. Government must allow importation of maize NOW!!!

The meeting also agreed that thereafter the league of southwest PAN Chairmen and the southwest chairman will proceed to Ado Ekiti to have an emergency meeting with The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

This is in a bid to have him impress it on the National Executive Council as well as the Presidency that this is the time to allow importation of maize.

Therefore  great farmers you are specially invited to this emergency press briefing on 19th January,  2021 at the NUJ Secretariat,  Iyaganku,  Ibadan.

The time is 11:00am. Let us fight together to save our investments and our dear poultry industry. If we fight, we may win;  but if we keep quiet we have lost the battle already!

GREAT FARMERS….GREAT NATION

Signed by the

Public Relations Secretary,

PAN Oyo State.

For Chairman.
