How Farmers can Mitigate the Effect of Climate Change – NCRI BOSS

 

The Executive DIrector of the National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi, Dr Aliyu Umar has admonished Nigerian farmers to adopt Climate Smart Agricultural strategies in order to cope with the current obvious effects of climate change which has made the weather very unfriendly to agricultural practices.

The NCRI boss gave this advice to farmers recently while delivering his keynote address during the maiden annual In-House Research Review program of the Bacita Outstation of the institute.

Umar, who was represented by the Head of the institute’s Outstation In Bacita, Mr Mumeen A. Yusuf noted that the National Cereals research Institute Badeggi, has developed various Climate smart Technologies whose adoption can help farmers survive the potential effects of climate change which is currently affecting most agro-ecologies of the country.

He added that the adoption of drought resistant, flood resistant, pest and disease resistant seed varieties of all the institute’s mandate crops by farmers has been proven to be a way out of the current environmental challenge which is capable of affecting the food security of the nation if farmers refuse to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the federal government through the research activities of the institute.

On his part, the lead scientist and Head of NCRI- Outstation In Bacita, Mr Mumeen Yusuf while welcoming participants to the research review program hinted that the Review Meeting shall produce outcomes which will result in execution of several agricultural extension activities capable of boosting the productivity of farmers in the host community of Bacita and the state at large.
