Functionally reports to: Vegetation Unit Manager/Farm Manager

Administratively reports to: Human Resources Manager​

Primary Place of Assignment: Awowo and Abattoir

Job Purpose

The Head Agronomy engages in a study of soil, plants, seeds, and produce to better understand crop needs and develop more effective and efficient farming practices that improves harvest volume & quality. They conduct research, take and test samples, and solve complex problems.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Studies plants and soil in order to develop better planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improve crop yield, and solve problems facing the agriculture industry.
  • Researches, develops, and promotes farming practices or products that diminish the effects of changes in soil, climate, and weather or prevent damage from pests.
  • Visits fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples and testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.
  • Determines the plant selection process and the development of planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
  • Keeps detailed records regarding fields, crops, and samples.
  • Generates reports and presents findings to management, clients, or other interested parties.
  • Promotes produce and techniques through educational presentations.
  • Searches and develops new techniques for farming so that new and useful crops can be grown. Plans certain ways through which the crops can be grown even when they cannot be grown due to different seasons.

Develops innovative research-based techniques in agronomist functions and programs.

Create strategies in strengthening crop production and crop management.

Study, assess and evaluate soil chemistry and soil testing.

Initiate newer techniques in soil management processes.

Studies and evaluates plants, their biological aspects and their growth behavior.

Conducts research on latest trends in crop and soil management.

Develops ways to make crops more pest-resistant.

Develops and implement quality initiatives in agronomist programs.

  • Average usage period of fertilizer, pesticides, chemicals and other inputs

Deliverables

  • Weekly reports on research embarked upon and devised techniques.
  • Monthly reports on input and output of all farm units analyzing production rates and trend.
  • Monthly notifications on pesticides, herbicides, seeds, fertilizer and plant treatment.

Background experience/qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science or related field.
  • Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office and diagnostic scientific software.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong research, decision making, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.
  • Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments.
  • Sales and presentation skills are also a major plus.
